Our Department of Psychiatry opened up its day-hospital in June 1989 and settled down its acute wards in December 1989. The Department of Psychiatry recognizes the importance of dedicated outreach for the early detection and effective treatment of psychiatric disorders. From 1991 onwards, the department also dealt with community mental health services such as outreach home care, and community rehabilitation centers. We are, therefore, dedicated to integrated treatment and outcomes.

Our staff includes 4 board-certified psychiatrists, 3 nurse practitioners, 2 clinical psychologists, 2 social workers, 3 occupational therapists, and 14 nurses. In addition to outpatient service, we also afford inpatient beds with its capacity of 24-bed in acute wards, 100-bed in day-hospital, 20-bed in community rehabilitation centers. There are 70 patients received our outreach home care.

Besides general psychiatric care, our outpatient clinics also provide services such as individual psychotherapy, family and marriage therapy, biofeedback therapy, occupational aptitude test and evaluation. We also offer service to children and adolescents with a variety of diagnoses from 2 to 18 years of age by “children and adolescents special clinic”. For those patients who are in acute and offensive, we furnish with seclusion rooms and beds to provide 24-hour protection and treatment. Furthermore, our day-hospital and community rehabilitation centers also supply a diversity rehabilitation environment. In virtue of our implementation of therapeutic workers and sheltered works (e.g. our Olive Garden Rehabilitation Shops, rehabilitation work in hospital), we expect that patients gradually learn the skills to live independently and will successful return to their family and society in the future. Our outreach home care provides services such as home treatment, nursing consultation and crisis intervention for patients and their families, so that patients in their homes and communities can receive continuing healthcare services to reduce the burden of family care.

Guided by community-based healthcare services in regional hospital, therefore, we also committed to community service efforts by providing mental health counseling to people in the community and school to promote mental health of the community residents. We undertake domestic abuse intervention project and attentiveness and visit to suicide attempt notified cases project since 2008. Tainan Municipal Hospital has received Tainan City Hall’s Suicide Attempts Notified as well as Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Prevention Merit Performance Achievement Awards in 2008. These two awards honor the hospital for implementing best practices for suicide attempts notification and domestic violence and sexual assault victims care and ensuring them receive the highest quality care according to nationally accepted standards and recommendations. Moreover, the hospital received Tainan City Hall’s Community Suicide Prevention Awards in 2009 as well as Tainan City Health Bureau’s Domestic Abuse Intervention Project Awards in 2010.

In addition to clinical practices, we are also actively involved in academic activities such as organizing academic lectures, arranging training in the island and abroad, as well as meeting the requirements of accreditation to write essays. In short, we strike to create an integrated medical team to provide diverse and efficient mental health services.
