The Tainan Municipal Hospital Department of Surgery started its operation in 1988 with seven divisions: general surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, colorectal surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, cardiovascular surgery and plastic surgery.

As the hospital of choice for the finest medical staffs in Tainan, our service team is staffed with many senior staffs and offers the most comprehensive service among regional hospitals. Twelve affiliated board-certified surgeons are on staff with additional five visiting surgeons. The team commit themselves to offer excellent service. As a result, our patients are increasing every year. For the past two years, our Department has an average monthly census of above 400 patients.

Pancreaticoduodenectomy (Whipple’s procedure), designed for the treatments of ampulla of Vater, pancreatic cancer, common bile duct cancer, duodenal cancer, and chronic pancreatitis, is the most difficult and complex practice in gastrointestinal surgeries. The success of the procedure depends on the expertise of the surgeons, sophisticated post-operation care, and a comprehensive treatment plan. Nowadays, we have successfully performed 130 pancreaticoduodenectomies and have the richest experience among the regional teaching hospitals in southern Taiwan. We are proud of our accomplishments in keeping up with the pace of the surgical achievements of medical centers in Taiwan. The tactics of our successful performance lie in the endeavors of Dr. Yang who introduced the brand new operative technique to Taiwan to improve the technique of end-to-side pancreaticojejunostomy with duct-to-mucosa anastomosis, and to reduce the incidence of pancreatico-biliary fistula and post-pancreatectomy hemorrhage.

Gallbladder stones and common bile duct stones are the most common digestive disorders in Taiwan. Surgical Department at Tainan Municipal Hospital is dedicated to laparoscopic cholecystectomy since 1991. Our treatment plan requires the combined expertise of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) at our gastroenterology division. First, our gastroenterologists perform endoscopic sphinteroctomy (EST) to retrieve common bile duct stone. In succeeding to that, our surgeons then perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove the gallbladder as well as the stones. These procedures successfully treat the most common disorders of gallbladder combined with common bile duct stones. The advantages of these procedures are small surgical wounds as well as post-operative pain alleviation and the shorter terms of hospitalization. These excellent results are published in various international prestige journals. So far, we have 300 cases of laparoscopic cholecystectomy every year, which are the most fruitful results that makes us stand out among regional teaching hospitals in southern Taiwan.

Recently, colorectal cancer has occupied the third place of Ten Major Cause of Death in Taiwan. Consequently, colon surgery became a critical task in the procedures of our Gastrointestinal Surgery. We use a multidisciplinary approach to provide a wide range of services for the cancer screenings, colonoscopy, polyp amputations, diagnosis confirmations, procedure with post-operation follow-ups, and chemotherapy of patients with colorectal cancer. Our service team encompasses visiting physicians from different fields such as colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, and oncology. Currently, our colorectal surgery division is equipped with superior instruments like laparoscopic surgical apparatus, voice activation Robot, ultrasonographic harmonic scalpel, and LigaSure. These superior equipments are dedicated to all colorectal practices.

Our cardiovascular team includes 1 cardiovascular surgeon, and 2 perfusionists. In the field of cardiac surgery, our practice involves surgical treatment of adult acquired cardiac diseases. We perform traditional on pump or off pump coronary artery bypass grafting for ischemic heart disease and surgical treatment of various valvular diseases. Included in our cardiac practice is the treatment of diseases of the major vessels like aortic dissection. With respect to the vascular section of our practice, the bulk of our work involves treatment and maintenance of vascular access for dialysis patient through surgical and interventional modalities. In the diagnosis and treatment of peripheral arterial occlusive diseases, we provide various invasive and noninvasive diagnostic modalities like angiography and duplex scanning. Surgical bypass and interventional treatment options are also available to patients with peripheral arterial insufficiency.

Division of Thoracic surgery is dedicated to the diagnosis and procedure for lungs, mediastinum, and esophageal disorders. We also devoted our attentions to endoscopic treatment in thoracic and esophageal disorders. This division offers comprehensive services of thoracoscopy, bronchoscopy, laparoscopy and gastro-esophageal endoscopy. In addition, this division is also driven by its innovative approach to endoscopic thoracic sympathetic block and the treatment of patients with hyperhidrosis both in concepts and in techniques. This division plays an international leading role in this filed. We always present research results in national and international medical meetings, and put what we have learned into clinical practice and quality management. In 2009, Professor Ming-Ho Wu came into his tenure as the director of Surgical Department. His arrival has further enhanced our medical practices and education at the filed of Thoracic Surgery.

Our neurosurgery division can perform a wide range of neurosurgical practices. The neurosurgery team at this division consisted of two board-certified and well-trained neurosurgeons, who perform various cerebral and cervical spine surgeries as well as lumbar spine procedures. The majority of service offering here are procedures of intracranial hemorrhage resulting by head injuries and hypertensive hemorrhagic strokes. Our neurosurgical team is dedicated to offer immediate operations for patients with critical conditions to save their precious lives. Patients admitted to our emergency department can be sent to our operation room in the shortest time, within approximately one hour, as soon as the diagnoses are confirmed. Concerning with the spine procedure, we utilize operative microscope to perform sophisticated cervical spine as well as lumbar spine tumor procedure.
