The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery initially affiliated to the Surgical Department. Our department came into exist under the effort of our first chairman, Dr. Pei-Tang Chen, who not only introduced new orthopedic surgical techniques at that time, but also actively recruit new orthopedic specialists. The succession department chairmen, Dr. Shou-Chao Shaio and Dr. Wen-Yu Chen, contributed to our department by expanding our services with highly skilled care for patients. Currently, the department chairman is Dr. Hsien-Chou Tseng.

To date, we have a total of 51 beds. Our staff includes 7 full-time board-certified specialists and 5 part-time specialists. Our department treated patients from Yunlin, Chiayi and Tainan areas, as well as the referral patients from Kaohsiung area. The clinical services and programs offered by the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery include outpatient clinics and varied orthopedic surgeries such as traditional artificial joints, upper and lower extremities fracture surgery, spinal surgery, arthroscopic surgery, as well as other joint degeneration, osteophyte-associated disease, ligament repair and reconstruction, nerve compression syndrome, and the treatment of post-operative complications. Under the full support of our superintendent and the re-engineering of our director, Dr. Pei-Yuan Lee from Changhwa Show Chwan Hospital, we actively encourage our specialists to receive varied sub-specialist training, and to further develop new techniques such as orthopedic trauma, osteoporosis, minimally invasive spine, and minimally invasive ultrasound treatment.

Orthopaedic trauma service provides emergency orthopaedic care and post-traumatic reconstructive surgeries services to patients with complex acetabular and pelvis fractures pelvis, upper and lower limbs, open, and comminuted fracture. Many new steel or titanium metal locking plate implants, different from the traditional treatment. For poor healing of deep wounds or osteomyelitis, there are a variety of new dressings and the latest treatment of deep wounds to provide a complex wound care.

Our specific osteoporosis clinic service provides new approach to bone mass and quality measurement, osteoporosis counseling and drug counseling for a variety of treatment options. Our long-term goal aims at surveying the regional and national differences and comparison in bone mass density, and establishing databases with hospitals across the country as well as with hospitals aboard.

Minimally invasive spinal surgery includes vertebral compression fractures with bone cement vertebroplasty and minimally invasive spinal implants. Traditionally, the treatment with vertebral compression fracture in elderly always conducts in general anesthesia by a wide range wound implantation. The patients experience higher risk in the procedure. With over 200 cases in bone cement implantation for the past three years, we provide the patients short-term and long-term life quality with good care. Our long-term goal strives to endoscopic surgery of the spine, and cooperates with other hospitals in computer navigation spinal surgery.

Our ultrasound minimally invasive surgery uses ultrasound-guided, which is the least affect to the body, through 1-2 mm of the wound to relieve patients with regional nerve compression, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigger finger troubles. This procedure can also be guided by ultrasound for local injection of drugs and intra-articular hyaluronic acid injections, which is the treatment option that do not harm the tissue.
