Pathology
The Department of Pathology, an information provider, plays as eyes and ears of the clinician and supervisor of medical quality in hospital. By different ways, we do a rapid, accurate, and excellent service in tissue diagnosis.

1. Surgical pathology:
We examine around 15,000 surgical specimens for diagnoses each year. Among them, about 12 percent were malignancies or high-grade precancerous lesions requiring further evaluation or medical treatment. The pathological report is available within 24 hours after receiving the specimen in about 80 to 85 percent of the cases.

2. Cytology:
This service includes Pap’s smear and non-gynecological smear. The latter includes sputum, body fluid, urine and aspiration cytology. More than 23,000 cases of gynecological smears were performed in 2009. About 0.5 percent cases were HSIL. About 0.1 percent cases were invasive cervical cancers. The majority were early stage cancers. The results of early detection of cervical cancers reflex the effect of Pap’s smear in preventive medicine.

3. Frozen section:
This service is 24-hour available if necessary. In general, the result will complete within 20 minutes. Surgeons can make an immediate decision for the patient on the table by discussion with pathologist.

4. Special studies:
To make a differential diagnosis, more than one hundred different kinds of thistochemical and immunohistochemical stains can be applied.

5. Others:
We also provide other services including disease consultation, teaching programs, and autopsy, etc.
